Some people enjoy everything about winter. If you grew up in a state that was buried in snow every winter (like I did), then you’ll probably think those people are crazy. Winter can be beautiful, but it often adds stress to daily life that just shouldn’t be there. Luckily, here are some life hacks that will help you get through the rest of the winter.
.) Stuck in the snow?: Use kitty litter or your car’s floor mats to get traction and get yourself out of a ditch or slippery situation.
.) Hate fuzzy sweaters?: If your favorite sweater is “pilly” from being washed too much this winter, use a cheap razor (the kind with JUST blades, no soap) and go over the rough areas with it. It’ll be smooth again.
.) Are you slipping everywhere?: Screw some screws into the bottom of some old tennis shoes. You’ll gain traction, just don’t wear them inside (and be careful not to leave screws exposed in the sole).
.) Is your windshield washer fluid freezing?: Instead of buying more expensive fluid, mix together 2 quarts rubbing alcohol, 1 cup water, and 1 teaspoon dish detergent. You can also spray a mixture of 3:1 vinegar to water on your car windows to keep water from icing.
.) Cold, but don’t have insulated long johns?: Wear running tights or pantyhose under your pants.
.) Do your wipers stick to your windows? Keep them up in the air when you’re parked and cover them with old socks.
.) Is your house too cold?: If you have a ceiling fan, keep it on LOW and make sure it’s going in reverse (clockwise). It’ll push the warm air that rises to the ceiling back down to you.
.) Hate hat hair?: Use dry shampoo after taking off your hair and fluff your hair, it’ll be good as new.
.) Is shoveling snow too much effort?: Make the process a little smoother by spraying non-stick cooking spray on your shovel. The snow will glide right off.
.) Is your heater not getting the house warm enough?: If it’s a wall-mounted heater or radiator, put a layer of tinfoil against the wall (be careful not to use anything else that would be a fire hazard). The foil will reflect the heat back into the room and won’t let the wall absorb it.
.) Are freezing side mirrors causing dangerous commutes?: While parked, keep ziplock baggies over your side mirrors, it will prevent them from freezing over (and you forgetting about them while cleaning off your car).
.) Are your bike tires slipping in the snow?: Instead of buying different tires, add zip-ties to your tires. They can be easily snipped off and they provide more traction.
.) Are your boots making a mess on your shoe rack?: Cut up pool noodles and shove them in your boots, it’ll make them stand straight for easier storage.
.) Have to park outside during the winter overnight?: To avoid a thick, frozen windshield, park facing east. That way, the rising sun can help clear your window.
.) Windows frozen and you don’t own an ice scraper?: First, buy a cheap ice scraper. Second, if you can’t, use a non-metal spatula or any plastic card in your wallet to chip away the ice.
Surviving during the winter isn’t easy, but it can be done. The best way to live through the harsh winter months is to be prepared. Buy lock deicer, proper windshield washer fluid and have an emergency kit in the trunk of your car. For the house, make sure your windows are sealed and you aren’t wasting precious heat or energy.
